Teeth Whitening: In-Office vs. Take-Home Kits

Plenty of people want a brighter smile. Whether you have a wedding coming up, a reunion on the calendar, or you just want to feel better about your reflection, teeth whitening is one of the most popular things people ask us about. And you have options.

At Heather Adams Dentistry, we offer two main ways to whiten your teeth. One happens entirely in our office. The other happens in your own home, on your own schedule. Both work. But they work differently. So which one is right for you? Let’s break it down.

Teeth Whitening: In-Office vs. Take-Home Kits in Rogers, AR

In-Office Whitening: The Fast Track

In-office whitening is exactly what it sounds like. You come see us, sit back in one of our massage chairs (yes, really), and let us do the work. We start by protecting your gums and soft tissues. Then we apply a professional-strength whitening gel to your teeth. Many in-office systems also use a special light or laser to activate the gel and speed up the process.

The whole appointment usually takes about an hour. And when you walk out? Your teeth could be anywhere from three to eight shades brighter. In one visit.

Who it’s best for:

The trade-off: It costs more than take-home kits. And some people experience temporary tooth sensitivity afterward, though that fades quickly.

Take-Home Whitening: The Flexible Choice

Our take-home whitening isn’t what you grab off a drugstore shelf. This is professional-grade whitening, custom-made for your smile. We take impressions of your teeth and create custom-fitted trays that look a bit like mouthguards. You take those trays home along with professional whitening gel. Then you wear the trays for a certain amount of time each day, usually anywhere from 30 minutes to a few hours, depending on the strength we prescribe.

Within one to two weeks, you should see dramatic results. And because the trays are custom-fitted to your teeth, the gel stays where it belongs and doesn’t irritate your gums.

Who it’s best for:

The trade-off: It takes longer to see full results. You have to remember to use the trays consistently.

What About Drugstore Strips and Kits?

We get this question a lot. And here’s the honest answer: over-the-counter products can lighten your teeth a little. But they use a much weaker gel than what we provide. The trays are one-size-fits-all, which means gel can leak onto your gums and cause irritation.

For most people, drugstore kits are frustrating. You use the whole box and feel like nothing really changed. That’s not you being picky. That’s the difference between professional and non-professional whitening.

We Do Whitening Differently

At Heather Adams Dentistry, we don’t just hand you a kit and send you out the door. We talk with you about your goals, your budget, and your timeline. We check for any underlying issues, like cavities or gum disease, that should be treated before whitening. And we help you choose the option that fits your life.

We also offer custom whitening protocols. That means we sometimes combine in-office and take-home treatments for the best of both worlds.
